YOUNG ARTS IN WEST SURREY

NADFAS recognises the valuable contribution of the arts to the development of creative, cognitive, communication and social skills in young people. Art also serves as a route into other fields such as history, the environment, science and technology.

The aim of NADFAS Young Arts is to expand the horizons of young people through their involvement in creative activities.

West Surrey NADFAS societies have an excellent record of inspiring youngsters, having started with a Young NADFAS group in Haslemere with all societies having funded Young Arts projects in 2007. With relatively low budgets, these projects have not only made a difference to many young people, but have enhanced the skills of Art & Design teachers. To witness the joy and involvement of youngsters during the visit of an artist to their school and to see their pride when their work is completed and exhibited is indeed a privilege and reward for the supporting society and its membership.

Englemere DFAS: So far in 2009: a ceramics workshop with Sadie James was organised at Holy Trinity School, Sunningdale. EDFAS sponsored an art session with Kerry Lemon as part of the Bracknell Pyramid Scheme [organised by MIND] - a service for children of primary school age, to help them fulfil their potential by improving their self confidence and self esteem. A second workshop at Great Hollands School in Bracknell with Sadie James is planned. EDFAS holds its lectures at St. George's School in Ascot and is developing a partnership with the school whereby one lecture per year, relevant to the school's curriculum, is chosen jointly and open to students.

Farnham DFAS: [1] Green Man Project at Hale School - one of the projects funded by the Young Arts Group was based on the legend of “The Green Man”. It took place at Hale County Primary School and involved 64 eight and nine year old pupils who worked in pairs with the Berkshire artist Sadie James. The task set them was the making of a three-dimentional mask; the base being cardboard and the surface being built up with rolled newspaper for the features. [2] A West Street Potters Farnham Summer Project with Tom Barnett,an incendiary ceramicist, funded by the Young Arts Group of FDFAS. Over two days, with a week in between to allow for drying, a bottle sculpture was constructed and fired in Alice Holt Forest. The clay mix, designed to cope with rapid drying and unpredictable firing conditions, was trodden by energetic children who out-performed any machine that could have been used. This ready mix was rolled and cut, using a cardboard template, into scaled down bricks - customised by each maker. Faces, animals, bored holes, abstract impressed designs and signatures brought a graffiti quality to the ‘bottle wall’. [3] The final project of the Young Arts Group took place at the William Cobbett Junior School on 29th September. Sadie James, an artist from Berkshire, introduced the 90 Year 5 pupils, aged 9 – 10 years to the technique of monoprinting. The pupils were divided into 3 groups, with their class teacher, an assistant and a Young Arts volunteer to help them in each case. Each group was given a different theme to explore and these were Trees, Bugs and Butterflies.

Haslemere DFAS: This year Haslemere DFAS has donated funds to sponsor prizes for local Junior art competitions. A donation of £25 was made for first prize in the Junior category (under 12 years) of the Haslemere Festival 'Images of Haslemere' Art Competition which took place in May 2009 and was awarded to Jemima Barr (see photograph). A further £260 has been donated to the Vivartis Autumn Arts Festival, at King Edward's School in Witley, for first and second prize in two categories of the Junior and Prep Schools Art Competitions. The latter donation is part of a continuing association between Haslemere DFAS and art students at King Edward's. Haslemere DFAS has full details about their Young Arts activities, past and present, on the HDFAS website at www.haslemeredfas.org.uk.

Windlebrook DFAS: Have supported a project at Meadowcroft Community Infant School, Chertsey and are also working with Footsteps at the Woking and Sam Beare Hospices which helps bereaved children to express themselves through art and have financed a sculptor for a day's workshop.

Woking DFAS: Links were established with the Head of the Art Department at Winston Churchill School in St John’s. A timetable was mapped out to fit with the curriculum of Years 7, 8 and 9. In February I met a ceramic artist, Angie Sayer, who was prepared to work with pupils who had not used clay before and she would fire the pieces in her own kiln. At the end of the Summer Term we booked a date with the school and worked with a group of pupils for a whole day in July. During this time they learnt about the properties of clay and the way to work with it. The school had been exploring ‘masks’ as a theme and the pupils had already designed a double-sided mask which was translated into a large clay pot and then decorated with slip. The pupils were all completely focused on the task and enjoyed their first experience with real clay.

NADFAS East & West Surrey Areas DFAS: Have this year given money to The Lightbox, Woking for a Paper Plane Competition which was run in conjunction with the Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition. NADFAS Volunteers took part in the running of it and it was a happy occasion for many children.
