| | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - Chairmen East and West Surrey Areas of NADFAS were delighted to be in partnership with the Surrey Hills Society for the Celebrating Surrey Festival at Loseley Park in June to showcase the diverse range of local arts and crafts, which have influenced the character and history of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This was Surrey’s first ever, open air arts festival - part of Surrey’s response to the 2012 Games and Cultural Olympiad programme.
| | | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - Watts Gallery Tiles Over 12,500 visitors and participants attended the Festival over the weekend and there were 28 NADFAS volunteers on hand to help with all the activities and to celebrate the contribution made by Young Arts, Heritage Volunteers and Church Recorders in Surrey.
Leading up to the Festival, young people aged 5 to 16 were invited to submit a photographic image celebrating the special nature of the Surrey Hills and we are very grateful to the experienced panel from Dorking Camera Club for their help in judging the entries. The standard was extremely good with many "Highly Commended". The three winning photographs were: ‘Old Tree with Bluebells’ (Anna Craddock (5); ‘Newlands Corner’ (Jessica Nunn (14); and ‘Peace at Waverley’ (Richard Mortimer (12).
| | | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - Oliver The event brought together musicians, artists and performers of all kinds in a celebration of Surrey, its landscapes, heritage and cultures and featured many art-based opportunities for young people, many funded as Young Arts projects by donations from Surrey societies. Activities, workshops and displays within the NADFAS/Surrey Hills marquee, included the Watts Gallery with opportunities to make a tile for the 'Hope Wall Project'. The "brass rubbing", representing the work of the Church Recorders groups, proved to be an extremely popular activity with young and 'not so young' alike.
| | | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - Fire & Iron Gallery Thanks to the generosity of Mike More-Molyneux, the owner of Loseley House, two of their antique quilts, which were conserved by West Surrey Heritage Volunteers, were on display.
Fire and Iron Gallery’s metalwork display celebrated one ironworking family’s journey “home” to Surrey; from ironfounder Peter Quinnell (1603-66) of Compton, near Loseley, via international adventure, full-circle back to Loseley 2010 and his descendant Lucy Quinnell of Fire and Iron.
| | | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - North Downs Lacemakers Creative Fibres used spinning wheel and spindle to demonstrate traditional crafts and show methods old and new of weaving and dyeing. There was a display of their crafts, including braiding and beading, and many children (and their parents) took the opportunity to have a go.
The North Downs Lacemakers invited everyone to add to their "Pass the Pillow" project - started in 2009, the aim is to get as many people as possible to participate in making this continuous piece of lace by the start of the London Olympics in 2012. (Pictured making lace is John Northcott, Chairman of Mole Valley DC - his wife Gill is a NADFAS Heritage Volunteer with the Polesden Lacey Costume project.)
| | | June 25 2010 | Surrey Festival - Victorian Girls Added to all this were storytellers and a chance to dress up from Surrey Arts Wardrobe's collection of costumes from past times, whilst outside the Coppice Workers showed how wood could be worked by hand - and there were the Surrey sheep.
